AMMA Australia: Official Australian Site of Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma - the "hugging saint")
Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, or Amma (meaning 'Mother' in Malayalam), also known as the "hugging saint", is cherished throughout the world as an humanitarian and spiritual teacher who is changing the lives of people all over the world over through her teachings and the example of her life.
Amma teaches that, in essence, every being in this world is of one divine essence and that understanding this profound truth is the way to end suffering—both the emotional suffering of the individual as well as the material suffering of the poor and needy.
Amma has been coming to Australia since 1989, inspiring countless people to try to create more space in their hearts for others. Aside from Amma's bi-annual programs in various locations throughout the country, there are Amma Groups that meet regularly in order to engage in spiritual practices such as meditation as well as to do community-oriented service projects, such as feeding the poor and planting trees.
